Getting Answers to Your Joint Replacement Questions - An update Arthroplastic techniques and Rehabilitation for the Shoulder, Hip and Knee

Fees: PABC Members $200; Student Members $100; Non-Members $300

Please join us for a one-day symposium on new advances in joint arthroplasty.  Our Orthopaedic surgeon and phyiotherapist teams will discuss surgical techniques, types of prosethesis, potential limitations and considerations for rehabilitation for each joint.  Dr. Bas Masri and physiotherapist Bruce Clark join forces for a morning focusing on the hip & knee, and Dr. Robert Hawkins and physiotherapist Cameron Bennett spend the afternoon bringing members up to speed on Shoulder Arthroplasty. We will discuss:

  • Indications for surgery
  • Types of joint sparing procedures
  • Types of protheses
  • Surgical procedures
  • Surgical guidelines (for rehab)
  • Complications
  • Rehab 'protocols' for types of protheses
  • Problems with particular types
  • Outcomes for those with varying levels of fitness and tissue health
  • Patient education, issues with regaining range, strength, typical patterns of weakness
  • Information regarding weight training, sport and risk of dislocation.    


About the presenters
:

Dr. Bas Masri

Dr. Masri was born in Beirut on January 14, 1965; attending elementary school and high school in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1981, he migrated to Canada to attend the University of British Columbia (UBC) in September 1981, graduating with honors with a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1985; he also started his medical training at UBC in the fall of 1984; graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree in June 1988.

After completing a one-year rotating intern at the Grey Nuns Hospital in June 1989, he returned to Vancouver and began his orthopaedic surgery residency program at UBC.  After graduating in June of 1994; becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, November 1994.

Following graduation from residency, he completed two fellowships in Adult Reconstructive Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Oncology, one at UBC in December 31, 1994 and another at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City in July 1995.

He was promoted to a full Professor in July 2006 and is the Department Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at UBC, VGH and UBC Hospitals in addition to being the Medical Director of the UBC Centre for Surgical Innovation.

He is (by invitation only) a member of the Hip Society, the Knee Society and the American Orthopaedic Association; and is currently serving as the secretary, member of the board and member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

 Robert H Hawkins MD FRCS(C)

Dr Hawkins got his MD degree from Queen’s University and his orthopedic surgery training at Vancouver General Hospital.

After 6 years in Penticton BC he took further subspecialty training in the shoulder at London Ontario. He resumed practice with a special interest in shoulder disorders in Vancouver and was a consultant at the Alan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre for 20 years.

He currently is Clinical Professor of Orthopedics and practices at UBC and Vancouver General Hospitals. In 2009 he won the UBC Clinical Faculty Teaching award. He also works regularly in the Yukon. He has taught and practiced surgery in Uganda as a volunteer with Health Volunteers Overseas.

Bruce M. Clark PT

A graduate from the University of Otago in New Zealand, Bruce has worked in Vancouver since 1970. From 1972 to 2002 he worked as Senior Physiotherapist for The Arthritis Society and was involved with developing programs for the management of Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. He has continued to be involved to the present in both preoperative management, including education as well as post operative management. He is in private practice in Vancouver working in a rheumatology office.

Cameron Bennett MPT (Musculoskeletal) BSc CSCS

Cameron Bennett is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist practicing in British Columbia, Canada. He received bachelor degrees in science and physiotherapy from the University of Melbourne, Australia with a clinical Master’s in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in 2003. In Australia, he worked in a number of roles with sports teams, public and multidisciplinary private practice and teaching undergraduate physiotherapy. He currently works in two Vancouver practices offering special interest clinics (Active Shoulder Clinics) dealing with shoulder pain and injury, with an exclusive practice in shoulder injury for the past 7 years.
 
He is interested in combining and simplifying much of the rehabilitation and orthopedic information with an interest in clinical and radiological correlation and the role of injection therapy in shoulder injury and pain. He is also actively involved in physician education presenting lectures and workshops on a variety of shoulder pain topics.
